Cellophonics: Wood on the Tracks
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Ground-breaking cello quartet Cellophonics bring a dynamic and wide-ranging programme, drawing together contemporary works by Ronnie's favourites Guy Barker, Callum Au and Rowland Sutherland alongside music inspired by their 16th and 17th Century counterparts.
Featuring Chris Allan, Ian Burdge, Tim Lowe and Ben Rogerson, the ensemble showcases the cello’s remarkable versatility, performing with warmth and virtuosity, to bring to life the contrasting characteristics of the instrument.
At the heart of the programme is Guy Barker’s Wood on the Tracks, which lends its name to both the evening and the quartet’s recent release on SOMM Records. Newer works, including Roderick Elms’ high-energy Divertimento, Simon Baggs’ intimate Soliloquy and Edward Harris-Brown’s playful Not Now, Cato! , sit alongside music rooted in the 16th and 17th centuries, reimagined through a distinctly contemporary lens.
Formed by a collective of like-minded cellists, Cellophonics have quickly built a reputation for performances that move from the operatic tones of Puccini’s Tosca to the driving rhythms of jazz. With a myriad of stops along the way, their eclectic musical journey has something for everyone.
